The sporting clubs from Arad obtained remarkable results in handball, tennis, athletics,
target shooting, swimming, athletics, weight lifting, boxing, and wrestling. For example,
the wrestler Roman Codreanu obtained the bronze medal at the Moscow Olympic Games of
Graeco-Roman wrestling in 1980, Sorin Babi (Steaua, Bucharest) became Olympic champion
at free shooting and Silvia Káposztay world champion and world recordman at target shooting.
In the last decades of 20th century many other sports as rugby, judo, martial arts, bodybuilding
and fitness were developed. There were few sports halls very well endowed.
Having a favorable position, on the Mures River banks, Arad was always a place for water sports.
In the year 1891 at Arad was held first rowing competition. Arad, also, hosted first national
rowing championship, dominated by local sportsmen and here was founded the Romanian Academic
Rowing Federation. Valeria Racila (UTA sport club) obtained the greatest success in this sport
in 1976 at Montreal's Olympic games when she became Olympic champion, after obtaining the title
of European champion in 1975.
Another sport branch that provided many successes is the tennis table.
"Vointa" Sport club from Arad obtained more than 100 national titles, two silver
medals at World Championships, gold, silver, and bronze medals at European
Championships, 33 Balkan titles and it was two time European Champions Cup finalist.

Gymnastics have a great tradition in Arad area. Arad Gymnastic Association was founded in 1879 and in 1938 Hakoah Association obtains first national title at women gymnastics, on teams. Emilia
Eberle was the most successful gymnast from Arad, obtained World and Olympic medals (Moscow, 1980).
