Only a few Romanian cities can boast with such a rich sport tradition as Arad. Great champions and
many sports were born in Arad enriching the glory and treasure of the Romanian sport.

The first official football game from Romania was held in Arad on August 15th, 1899. This was
the first game with public and referees and was played on a field of the regular size
with two halves of 45 minutes each. Having a tradition to be invy the football became
in the 20th Century the most popular game. The most loved football team of Arad was
and still is UTA, founded during interwar period by the big manufacturer, the baron
Franscisc Neumann. He was the main stockholder of the Alcohol and Yeast Factory
(today Indagrara), the Mill and the Textiles Factory from Arad.

UTA Stadium was inaugurated in September 1st, 1946 and the construction was a copy o Arsenal
London Arena. Even the grass was transported by plane directly from England in special containers.

Six times national champions and two times Romania's Football Cup winners, UTA reached its apogee
in 1971/1972 European Champions Cup edition when they eliminated the famous and powerful Dutch
team Feyeenord Rotterdam which was at that time the winner of previous edition of European
Champions Cup and Intercontinental Cup. UTA gave many other champions, among which it was
Helmut Duckadam "the hero from Sevilla", the goalkeeper of Steaua Bucharest football team.
In the final of European Champions Cup, 7th May 1986, when Steaua played against CF Barcelona,
Dukadam caught four consecutive penalty kicks, record not break since then according to
Guinness Book of World Record.
